1999 Features
Death In Summer - William TrevorFeature December 1999<br> A literary thriller that draws you inexorably through one character’s quiet obsession. A young wife is killed leaving her husband alone with their new child. Forced to take on a nanny he advertises and begins interviews. A young woman arrives and although not suitable for the position develops an unhealthy attachment to the child and the father. Although this might sound like a movie-of-the-week plot, Trevor's’ calm and radiant writing elevates it to a well deserved place alongside his other works (Felicia’s Journey and The Hill Bachelors). Absolutely compelling. This book will just break your heart.
The Shadow of Ashland - Terrence GreenFeature November 1999 Terry Green is another writer I have tried to promote most of my bookselling career. A gentle, truly Canadian voice that resonates right down to your socks. Leo Nolan’s mother is dying. Her last request is for him to find her only brother who disappeared into the U.S. during the Great Depression. Unable to locate him or find any information about Jack Radey, Leo is surprised to receive a letter from him the day after her death – postmarked 50 years earlier. Two more letters follow driving Leo to recreate his Uncle’s journey to Ashland, Kentucky. This lovely little book is a journey into the heart told by a superb storyteller. |
