The Yard by Alex Grecian

The_YardThe Yard, Alex Grecian, Berkley, $17.00

There was a great television series the BBC released this year called “Ripper Street”.  If you enjoyed that and love the time period, The Yard is your book for June and a terrific gift for Father’s Day.

Set just after the Ripper Murders in a still terrified London that has lost all faith in their defeated constabulary, The Metropolitan Police are called in to a crime that strikes them at their core.  One of their own, one of the twelve inspectors of the Murder Squad is found bound in a small trunk at Euston Street Station with eyes and lips sewn shut.  Walter Day, the man he had just recently hired is called on to investigate the crime.  New to the City, new to the job, Day relies on Dr. Bernard Kingsley, a quirky pathologist to help him find the killer.  Amidst the simmering anger of the London crowds,
they uncover a much darker plot to destroy the Yard itself.

The Yard is a page-turner, with subplots a plenty that draw you into the sinister Victorian surroundings till it smells foggy with smoke and age.  Except for the occasional anachronism, Grecian tells a compelling story peopled with flawed characters that discover as much about themselves as they do the killer.  And it looks like this is just the beginning;   I will be looking forward to future investigations.
