The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman

Light_Betwee_OceansThe Light Between Oceans, M.L. Stedman, Scribner, $18.99

Here’s a morality question for you.  A young couple live on a remote island.  He is the lighthouse keeper and she has just miscarried for the third time.   A rowboat washes ashore, the male figure not long dead and a baby swaddled in her mother’s sweater.  Now, the child is not much older than their last child would have been and they are fully cut off from the mainland until supplies come almost a year away.  What would you do? Haunted by his tour of duty overseas during WWI, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take a job with the peace and isolation he seeks -- a lighthouse keeper on the island of Janus.  With time and solace, Tom returns to the mainland and is surprised to meet the irrepressible Isabel who he marries and brings back to the island.  Soon she too falls in love with its wild beauty and they begin to build a life together -- a life that will be forged by one fateful decision.

Stedman’s first novel is an unforgettable and “unputdownable” one;   written with such certainty you would think it was her tenth.  Her lyrical and insightful writing peoples this complex story with an amazing array of characters that speak to your heart and your mind.  Never maudlin but so well realized this would be a perfect book for any Book Club as there is so much to discuss.  But that aside, this is a sublime book that stays with you for days afterwards  making you ask yourself, what would I do?
