Up Jumps the Devil by Michael Poore

Up_Jumps_the_DevilUp Jumps the Devil, Michael Poore, Ecco (Harper Collins), $15.99

So far this has been a summer of intense heat and no rain.  What better character to have in your life right now than John Scratch, a.k.a the Devil.  If you love Christopher Moore (who blurbs it) this is your chance to discover a rollicking, raucous read for the cottage. But don’t be surprised; while the sex, silliness and satire are all there, Poore adds a depth to his devil and our history that smacks of Paradise Lost and the devastation of our choices.  And the writing?   Take Moore and throw in Richard Grant (Tex and Molly in the Afterlife) and James Morrow (Towing Jehovah) and you will get the gist, but Poore’s subtlety and wit are all his own.
The devil is the victim of a broken heart.  After falling from grace with another angel he was mad for, she leaves him on a chaotic Earth for the safety of Heaven.   Now he will move all of Earth to get her back; poking and prodding the humans on a course to civilize them.  But we keep defeating him at every curve until he discovers America and its a fresh slate for him to work on.  For the next 500 years we follow John Scratch as he makes his deals and gets his souls, manipulates the humans and searches for his one true love. From Jamestown to the Civil War, from Woodstock to Reality TV, the devil keeps fighting constantly, losing the Big Picture and being swallowed by the little one.
This is a damn good read.  Funny and lyrical, tragic and biting, I’m impressed with what Poore has done with this well used character, his Shakespearian edition of our Rebel Angel.  So buy it, you will love it, but I promise, you will never look at cows ... or Mary Poppins the same way ever again.
