The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

night_circusThe Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern, Doubleday, $21.00

I first heard about this book on Twitter as the publisher pumped its release last fall.  I didn’t even get a chance to open it before it started flying off the shelf and our reorders went mad.  It was one of our top five bestsellers last Christmas.   When I finally got to take a copy home to read it, I was transfixed.  This is probably one of the best first novels I have read in ... too many years to count. Night Circus originally reminded me of the Prestige by Christopher Priest.  Two illusionists wage an ideological war using their protégés as living pawns.  It is a fight to prove the validity of nature versus nurture – natural talent versus a weapon honed by schooling and thought.  Between the two rival forces a travelling Circus of unbelievable beauty is created.  Each contestant must add to it another incredible layer of illusion to baffle and delight the audience.  But as the environment grows into a force of nature, the combatants do the one thing their mentors never imagined they could do ... fall in love.  As the circus and heart-stopping illusions deepen, so to do the secrets and traps adjusted by outside forces; because the battle is not just to prove an intellectual point but to prove the point once and for all ... with the death of the loser and the circus itself.

This novel is pure and utter magic.  The descriptions of the Night Circus create such a sense of overwhelming yearning in the reader it almost breaks your heart that this tented city of wonder will never appear in a field outside your home.  You will never be able to smell or touch this incredible concoction of enchantment, lust and innocence.  Morgenstern has crafted a world you want to stay in forever, to explore again and again like a special retreat in the cupboard of your childhood but viewed through world weary eyes.

This modern yet beautifully antiquated fable is a gift this talented author has given us.  And although I rarely say this, buy this book now.  Buy it, fall in love with it and then buy some more to give to all the people in your life you treasure.
